Sometime later, Cain presented an offering to the Lord from the land\u2019s crop while Abel presented his flock\u2019s oldest offspring with their fat. The Lord looked favorably on Abel and his sacrifice but didn\u2019t look favorably on Cain and his sacrifice. Cain became very angry and looked resentful. The Lord said to Cain, \u201cWhy are you angry, and why do you look so resentful? If you do the right thing, won\u2019t you be accepted<\/strong>? But if you don\u2019t do the right thing, sin will be waiting at the door ready to strike! It will entice you, but you must rule over it<\/strong>.\u201d \u2014Genesis 4:3-7<\/p>\n\n\n\n Don\u2019t keep looking at my sins. You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death<\/strong>. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace<\/strong>. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God\u2019s laws, and it never will. That\u2019s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God<\/strong>. \u2014Romans 8:5-8<\/p>\n\n\n\n But you are not controlled by your sinful nature<\/strong>. You are controlled by the Spirit<\/strong> if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. \u2014Romans 8:9-11<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, <\/sup>you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do<\/strong>. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit, you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children <\/sup>of God. \u2014Romans 8:12-13<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives<\/strong>. Then you won\u2019t be doing what your sinful nature craves<\/strong>. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires<\/strong>. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. \u2014 Galatians 5:16-19<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there<\/strong>. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit\u2019s leading in every part of our lives<\/strong>. \u2014Galatians 5:24-25<\/p>\n\n\n\n
